Characteristics and Differences of Aluminum 7020

Ultralight or rigid frame chairs are wheelchairs that make their name famous. The importance of weight in these chairs is the ratio that, the lower the weight, the less force to be made to propel itself. Usually for every 2 pounds that we add to the chair with some component, we increase the torque required to propel the chair by 2%. The weight also influences the transport capacity of the chair. If it's easier to transport, the user will be more independent. For users with limited mobility, increasing the weight of the chair by 1 pound can make the difference between getting the chair into the car alone or having to call for help.

Due to all these characteristics, ultralight chairs require lightweight manufacturing materials, but also of high quality, to guarantee durability.

The material that provides quality and durability is Aeronautical Aluminum, this is 6000 and 7000. Both in their raw form without any processing are equally light, but 7000 aluminum is more resistant. Because it is a more resistant aluminum, it can undergo a forming process in which it can become even lighter. Among the 7000 aluminum options we find the 7020 alloy. The 7020 Aluminum is even more resistant than the 7000 aluminum and that is why it can undergo more forming processes to make it lighter by reducing the thickness of the walls.

There is a process used by Sunrise Medical on 7020 Aluminum tubing known as Hydroforming. In this process, a hydraulic fluid is used and injected into the tube to give it an oval shape. It is a very common process in the sports car and high performance bicycle industry. After this process, the frames are heat treated after welding to increase the strength and hardness of the aluminum. This is known as ShapeLoc Technology and is a Sunrise Medical proprietary process.

7020 aluminum by nature in and in combination with being subjected to the hydroforming and ShapeLoc processes is capable of reducing the weight up to 1/3 of the total. With this we achieve the perfect combination of durability, quality and low weight.

You can find this in the Ultralight Nitrum Chair from Sunrise Medical. If you need more information, do not hesitate to contact us.
