The Differences Between a Wheelchair for Daily Use and a Sports Chair

The difference and importance of a wheelchair for daily use and a sports chair

Because there are no semi-sport wheelchairs, the difference between a wheelchair for daily use and one for sports is very important. Just like shoes, different wheelchairs have different design characteristics based on the functionality of the chair.

An appropriate sports chair is determined by the age, height, weight, diagnoses and type of sport played by the user. Typically, the rear wheels are cambered (angled outward relative to the floor) to help with sharp turns to prevent the chair from tipping sideways. Sometimes one or two rear anti-tips or protective roll bars are required to avoid injuries. Each player requires their own personalized chair.

Sports chairs have evolved since the 60s with the increasing competition of the Paralympic games. Chairs are regulated based on international rules governing shape, structure, accessories and height, depending on the sport. In official events, if these requirements aren’t met, the player can’t participate. In addition to the chair, the athlete themselves has a classification based on the sport and physical functionality.

Currently, there is a lot of information online to learn, understand and enjoy these sports. In summary, sports wheelchairs need to be tailored to the sport to avoid injury and damage to the facilities.
