The Octopus

Rifton Pacer

Many years ago (more than 10 at this point) when I was working as a therapist in a private rehabilitation center, I met a 5-year-old girl, Sofia, who was diagnosed with athetoid cerebral palsy. I met with her for rehabilitation twice a week and she was ready for a new challenge: gait training.

As therapists, we always seek to help our patients and build confidence. There is always something more that can be done – more to learn, more positions to strive for, and more functional achievements. The time we are with our patients is very important, but as we all know, learning new skills requires a lot of practice and many hours of hard work. These skills must also be possible at home, at school, and in the community to truly become functional achievements. With Sofia and her family, we begin this new challenge with the help of the Rifton Pacer gait trainer.

I call the Pacer “the octopus" because as therapists working in rehabilitation, we feel like we need 8 hands! We control the posture of our patients not just using our hands, but our whole body to help our patients progress in their rehabilitation. The great advantage of the Pacer Gait Trainer is that it provides several fully adjustable supports so we can control all parts of the body and make modifications until we achieve the best gait posture.

Thanks to the effort of Sofia, her family, and the Pacer, Sofia managed to take her first steps alone. Thank you, Sofia, for rising to the challenge and staying confident!
