Silla Sutra (Wheelchair Kamasutra) at the Latin American Congress of Occupational Therapy 2015

The 10th Latin American and the 3rd National Congress of Occupational Therapy 2015 were held from 28 to 31 October in San José, Costa Rica. Guiselle Espinoza, Sales Manager for Central America; and myself, Sales Representative for Mexico; as well as lecturers and speakers from several countries were present representing Loh Medical.

A high percentage of participants were local, and around 80 percent were women.

Guiselle was the main lecturer in the Loh Medical workshop on how to prescribe a wheelchair and its correct positioning, how to take measurements, and what requirements and needs are covered by each model and its accessories. With the help of the book “Silla Sutra” (Wheelchair Kamasutra), written by myself, I had the chance to deliver a lecture on Disability and Active Sexuality, a subject that is not spoken of enough and is, therefore, unknown.

My main objective is to inform, not to raise awareness; to call things by their right names, degenitalizing sexuality, and showing that every person, with or without disabilities, has a sexual energy that is to be enjoyed, not depending on physical limitations that may be present. We should not think about it in terms of just penis and vagina. Sexuality goes beyond just intercourse; it includes looks, smells... and pleasure should not be only local; it should be felt in our whole being, just like when we sneeze, for example: the pleasure is not felt only in one part, but in our whole body. It is also important to mention that talking about controlled drugs, always relying on the specialists and technology, can also help solving some deficiencies or dysfunctions. The most important thing is to know yourself, to enjoy what you feel and what you have, and to try to do whatever it takes to please your partner and yourself.

With good urinary routines, a good care of our skin and a good awareness of our own body, we can get to have very satisfying relationships; but still, it is important to mention that, if a leakage or a physiological accident occurs, it should be understood as just that, and we should not stop doing it or trying again. Creativity, attitude and decision go far beyond a physical limitation.

It was a very nice experience, not only visiting another country, but also being able to share information and options of life with the therapists and their patients in innovative subjects.
